Aaron Marks is experienced in handling data breach cases, and our firm is currently investigating claims on behalf of those recently affected by the recent Metro Infectious Disease Consultants (MIDC) breach of data. This leak includes including sensitive confidential personal health and clinical information, and personal information including Social Security numbers.
An email security incident was discovered on June 24, 2021, and Metro Infectious Disease Consultants is notifying over 170 thousand patients. An unauthorized individual managed to gain access to the protected health information of patients that was contained in certain employees' email accounts.
Steps were immediately taken to secure the accounts and prevent further access after the breach was discovered, and a computer forensics firm was hired by Metro Infectious Disease Consultants to investigate the extent and scope of the problem. The investigation determined the data breach only affected MIDC's email environment and that the compromised accounts did contain patient data.
MIDC has sent letters to all individuals affected by the breach to notify them and offer complimentary credit monitoring as well as identity theft protection services to all individuals whose Social Security number or driver’s license number was exposed by the data breach.
MIDC issued a statement reporting they do not believe that anyone’s personal information has been misused, or that the party who accessed the emails viewed or acquired any patients data. They are advising any affected clients to regularly monitor their credit reports, bank accounts, and credit card charges for suspicious activity.
The computer forensics firm MIDC hired to review the incident and analyze their cybersecurity defenses recommended implications they could take to enhance security, which are being put into effect to avoid any similar events from happening in the future.
